Relevance/rationale of the indicator (resp. why the indicator was chosen to measure the target and how it is suitable for these purposes)	The basic prerequisite for mapping the situation and appropriate targeting of programs for the prevention of alcohol abuse is the availability of data on the average consumption of alcohol per capita in internationally comparable units.
Target value of the indicator and its evaluation
Definition	Alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic expressed in litres of pure alcohol is calculated as an average per capita consumption. The number of inhabitants used in the calculation is the total mid-year population as at 1 July of the relevant reference year; it means that the pre-productive category of population aged 0–14 years is also covered.
