Relevance/rationale of the indicator (resp. why the indicator was chosen to measure the target and how it is suitable for these purposes) | Mental disorders occur in all regions and cultures of the world. The most prevalent of these disorders are depression and anxiety, which are estimated to affect nearly 1 in 10 people. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide. In 2019, there were over 700,000 estimated suicide deaths worldwide. |

Comment | The suicide rate in the Czech Republic has no longer a clear downward trend. Between 2005 and 2019 the suicide rate decreased slightly, but in the last two years the data show stagnation. In 2021, there were 11.6 suicides per 100,000 population, in absolute terms currently we are talking about 1,200 people a year who decide intentionally to end their lives. In addition to the events that were clearly evaluated as completed suicides, we also register events of undetected or undetermined intent, in which some deaths as a result of suicide are very likely partly included. The number of deaths of undetected or undetermined intent has been on an increasing trend in the last few years (208 in 2016, 579 in 2021). The lowest number of deaths from suicide was recorded in 2019 so far, when stood at 1,191 (year-on-year decrease by 12%). In the last seven years, the number of suicides stood below 1,400. Suicide is higher in men than women and was at least twice higher in the whole second half of the 20th century. In the second half of the 1990s, the predominance of men rose to 3 suicides of man to 1 suicide of woman, and since 2004 the ratio of the number of suicides of men to the number of suicides of women has been around four or five. In 2021, there were 3.8 suicides of men per one suicide of a woman, when 966 men and 255 women died from suicide. |
